The Clare-based former President of Active Retirement Ireland has described as “soul-destroying”, the feeling of being left alone on Christmas Day for many of the elderly population in our communities.
With focus on family and festivities in the build-up to the holiday season, it’s feared those living alone will struggle over the coming weeks, if no-one calls to their door, or picks up the phone to call them.
The colder weather can also pose a danger to older people unable to leave their homes, due to icy conditions.
Shannon-based Active Retirement member, Kay Murphy insists it’s particularly important for people to remain vigilant over the festive season and to check in with elderly or vulnerable family, neighbours and friends.
