United launched its service to Chicago in 2013, but now says the flights are no longer performing financially.

It says it regrets the move, which is United’s second cutback in Shannon in recent months – the carrier recently suspended its Newark service for the winter months.

Shannon Airport Management has expressed disappointment over the decision, saying it comes despite it’s best efforts and those of Tourism Ireland to reach an agreement with the airline.

Managing Director of Shannon Airport, Andrew Murphy says every effort was made to retain the service.

It’s understood that just over 20,000 passengers a year had been taking this service, and Shannon says it’s focused on trying to find a replacement.

Meelick Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe says this development sends out the wrong message and hopes another carrier can be found.
