Clare is one of 23 local authority areas, selected to run an open library system at one of it's branches, to allow it to stay open in the evening and weekends.

The "open Library system" was introduced ona trial basis two years ago at three libraries in Offaly and Sligo and now the move is to be rolled out in 23 other local authority areas.

2.3 million euro has been allocated towards the initiative, which will allow people to use the library in the evening and weekends, though an automated service.

But there has been mixed reactions towards the move, with councillors in Dublin voting against it, amidst concerns over job losses, despite reassurances from the Taoiseach Enda Kenny that this wouldn't be the case.

It's understood that the library in Ennis has been proposed to run the staffless service and Communications Officer with IMPACT trade union, Niall Shannahan says staff there are worried:

Clare County Council has confirmed that it has been selected to run the service at one of it's branches but that it won't be making any public comment until a process of consultation with staff, through their unions, is completed.

Former Mayor of Ennis, Councillor Johnny Flynn has expressed huge concern over the potential of job losses but he believes there is a need to change the hours that services are provided.
