There are fears that Clare's homelessness problem will only worsen over the coming months.

Latest figures from Clare County Council reveal that the number of people presenting themselves as homeless continues to rise, with Midwest Simon describing the situation in Clare as a crisis.

These figures reveal that almost 300 people have presented themselves as homeless to Clare County Council in the past year.

Of these, 59 were placed in emergency accomodation such as B&Bs or hotels and a further 39 were referred to the Laurel Lodge Hostel.

The rest were not housed, with the Council claiming that they would have been accommodated by relatives and friends.

General Manager of Midwest Simon, Jackie Bonfield says the figures are a stark reminder of the extend of the crisis here, and it's like to only get worse.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Clare's Housing Committee says, while much good is being done to re-home people here, authorities are struggling to cope.

Shannon Councillor Gerry Flynn is highlighting a lack of housing supply, something he insists will take time to address.
