Fears Clare People Will Have To Chose Between Heating And Eating After Energy Credits Scrapped

It’s feared vulnerable Clare households will be forced to chose between heating and eating if energy credits are scrapped.

It comes as Taoiseach Micheál Martin has ruled out the possibility of a cost of living package in the next budget.

Energy credits have come into renewed focus after ESB networks revealed that over 440,000 domestic gas and electricity customers are in arrears.

At present, consumers are benefitting from two €250 energy credits a year, however this support is expected to come to an end.

It’s after Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated the government doesn’t plan on having a cost of living package in the next budget.

Money Advisor with Clare’s Money Advice & Budgeting Service Collette Stack insists there are supports available for those struggling with payments.

A Clare mother and family carer, meanwhile, is calling on the Government to review its cost of living policies in its entirety, to ensure no vulnerable household has to chose between heating, eating and other essentials.

It’s after the ESB confirmed it wouldn’t pass on Storm Éowyn repair costs to consumers this year, but that the regulator will review network charges in the longer term.

Deborah Kett from Crusheen says safeguards need to be put in place.
