Fear Of Crime Remains An Issue For Elderly People

The Inagh-based CEO of Muintir na Tíre says the fear of crime remains a real issue for elderly people living alone.

The latest figures from the Census show that 9.5 per cent of Clare residents, over 11,100 prople, are living alone, while over 4,500 of these are aged 65 and over and nearly 60% are women.

Muintir na Tíre has criticised the persistent underspending of money allocated to the Senior Alert Scheme, which provides the elderly or vulnerable with a monitored portable alarm system.

The scheme has seen a low take-up, which Niall Garvey is blaming on failure by Government and community groups to promote it. He says many people don’t realise it’s available to them.
