Clare’s Oireachtas members are being urged to get off the fence and fight against proposals that could see farm land means tested for third level grants.
The Education Minister is reviewing the maintenance grants system as well as new proposals to include capital assets like land or a small business premises in the means test as well as parents income.
However farming organisations insist such assets are required by self employed people to generate income and are not a measure by which to gauge additional ability to pay.
They want the county’s TDs to resist any government attempts to push the proposals through.
Clare Fine Gael TD Pat Breen has indicated that he has already made his feelings clear on the matter to Rurai Quinn.
