A North Clare farmer convicted of breaking his partner’s cheekbone during a row has escaped jail.

64 year old PJ Canny of Pollagh, Carron admitted to assaulting 56 year old Sarah McNieve causing her harm at the Shearwater Plaza Hotel in Ballinasloe on the 22nd of January last year.
Galway Circuit Court heard a row had broken out between the two when the victim accused Mr Canny of paying too much attention to a woman who was " making eyes" at him – He then hit Ms McNieve.
Judge Gerard Griffin described it as a cowardly assault and sentenced the farmer to 12 months – suspended for three years,
