The families of the two young girls who were allegedly raped in Athlone last weekend have issued a statement – thanking the Gardaí and the local people for their support.

They say the level of public empathy and practical assistance they’ve received has been a source of comfort to them at this most difficult time.
A 30 year old man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – appeared before Longford District Court yesterday charged with four counts of raping the six and nine year old girls.
He’s been remanded in custody and will appear in court again this Friday.
