COP27 reached a historic deal over the weekend on a fund to support countries worst affected by climate change.

It’s the result of tense negotiations that spilled over into the early hours of yesterday morning.

Poorer countries most affected by climate change will be compensated, though details of who will pay and when have yet to be finalised.

The deal is being seen as a ground-breaking end to two weeks of talks in Egypt.

Theresa O’Donohoe of the Clare Environmental Network, who was at the summit, says the deal is a great step forward, but the Lisdoonvarna woman insists the failure to address oil and gas is one of the biggest failures of COP.

Clare’s Green Senator believes the war in Ukraine has acted as a wake up call, when it comes to the over-reliance on oil and gas and admits many countries are finally taking steps towards greener energy.

Inagh Senator Roisin Garvey says the problem currently lies with a determination by richer countries to keep getting richer, but she believes everyone has a part to play in moving away from fossil fuels.
