The Department of Health's 2017 Budget will increase to 14.2 billion euro of current expenditure, along with another 454 million for capital projects.

Minister Simon Harris has said this is the biggest in the history of the State, while full details on where he'll spend the money will be unveiled as part of the HSE's 2017 National Service Plan.

That's due in the coming weeks, and will, as ever, be highly scrutinised.

And while details remain somewhat unclear, Minister Harris has revealed there will be some extra funding for this area.

Additional money will be provided to the UL Hospitals Group to allow it open the new larger Emergency Department at Dooradoyle.

The long-delayed project had been slated to open this year, and then early in 2017, but is now expected to open in May.
