ESRI Report Outlines Benefits Of Work

The ESRI says the majority of unemployed people would be better off in work.

The research from the Economic and Social Research Institute has found eight out of ten jobseekers would earn at least 40% more in paid employment than on benefits.

It also found that jobseekers who lose their medical card when they return to work don't suffer as much as would be expected.

Professor Tim Callan from the ESRI says most unemployed people in Ireland are young and healthy, so the loss of a medical card does not generally impact as much as it would on an older person.
