ESB won’t increase flow from Parteen Weir today

The ESB says it won't increase the rate of water from Parteen Weir today, where the flow is currently at 440 cubic metres per second.

The situation is under review and it's feared the levels in Lough Derg may reach those seen in 2009, as flooding on the upper Shannon catchment makes its way down to South East Clare.

In South Galway, where flooding is extensive, an emergency community welfare clinic has opened at Gort Community Centre.

It's assisting with applications for humanitarian aid as communities across South Galway continue to struggle with severe flooding.

The army is continuing to assist Galway Council Council in shoring up flood defences. Road closures continue on many local routes around Gort and diversions continue around flood waters on the N18 at Labane.

The council is closely monitoring water levels elsewhere on that route, south of Kilcolgan.

Meanwhile, a Tipperary man has raised more than 2-thousand Euro for flood relief in County Clare.

Michael Fahey put a vintage tractor up for auction after seeing the plight of flood victims here.

The Thurles native presented a cheque for 2-thousand 2-hundred Euro to the Clare Branch of the Red Cross for humanitarian assistance.

According to the Red Cross, Mr Fahey has pledged futher fundraising support and is to hold a meeting on the issue in Thurles next Monday night (Jan. 4).
