The ESB has moved to clarify speculation surrounding the discovery of algae in water in South East Clare.
It follows reports of a dog being poisoned in the O'Briens Bridge area in recent weeks.
The ESB says it was contacted by Gardaí in relation to a dog poisoned in the O’Brien’s Bridge area, possibly on ESB lands.
A staff member was dispatched to investigate further, in an area around the west bank of the river Shannon, at O’Brien’s Bridge, which is not on ESB-owned lands.
In a statement to Clare FM, the company says "an ESB staff member noted to Gardaí that there was algal scum at the water’s edge in the area in question" and that the observation was made to assist in the investigation into recent poisonings.
The area in question is not under control of the ESB, and the company is stressing that it has no expertise in toxicology.
Gardaí in Killaloe say invesitgations into a report of poisoning in the area is continuing.
