The Environmental Protection Agency is urging Uisce Éireann to give equal priority to all areas in Clare where raw sewage is being discharged into water systems.
The EPA’s “Urban Waste Water Treatment Report 2022” has identified 26 towns and villages across Ireland that are not connected to waste water treatment infrastructure.
These include Kilkee, Kilrush, Ballyvaughan and Liscannor, while Lahinch has been found to be in breach of EU standards set to protect the environment.
In addition, Kilmihil has been highlighted as one of 13 areas nationwide where upgrade works on wastewater infrastructure aren’t due to commence until 2029.
EPA Inspector David Shannon says while some recent improvements have been seen in Clare in relation to waste water treatment, there are still many areas where sewage is flowing into water bodies entirely untreated.
