EPA reports points to vast improvements in drinking water supplies

There’s been a fifty percent reduction in the detection of e.coli levels in drinking water supplies across Ireland.

However a report by the Environmental Protection Agency found that 17 percent of private group water schemes were contaminated at least once during 2009, including 2 of the 12 schemes in Clare.

However the number of remedial works ordered to be carried out on schemes across the county fell from 9 to 3 in 2009 – those supplies improved in that year include Shannon, Kildysart, Ennistymon and Miltown Malbay

The EPA says Ireland’s water monitoring programme  compares well with our European counterparts but continued investment is need to enhance the country’s water infrastructure and drinking water quality.
