Ennis Town Centre car free ahead of Christmas shopping rush

Shoppers are being encouraged to enjoy a car-free Ennis town centre this week. 

O'Connell Square and much of O'Connell Street will be closed off to cars in a bid to attract more people into Ennis this afternoon, and again for parts of tomorrow, Tuesday and Christmas Eve.

The move comes ahead of debates on more long term pedestrianisation in the New Year, and Interim CEO of Ennis Chamber Alec Fleming says it's a welcome step.

Meanwhile, Clare Gardaí are reminding people to be careful of their belongings when out and about shopping this festive season. 

They are warning that pick pockets may be in operation in busy areas.
