Ennis ‘Smoky’ Coal Ban Set To Be Extended

A ban on so called ‘smoky’ coal currently in place in Ennis is set to be expanded to all urban areas.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has announced a review and public consultation of regulations which are currently enforced in Ennis and in 19 other cities and towns nationwide.

The ban on ‘smoky coal’ was introduced in Clare’s County Town last summer, and saw the number the number of breaches of air quality guidelines from October to December cut to 6, down from 26 the year before.

Officials admit that some of this is due to an improvement in weather, but Ennis Councillor and coal trader Frankie Neylon says air quality levels across Ireland must now be improved in this way.
