Once ranked in the top five cleanest towns nationwide, 2023 saw Ennis drop drastically as it fell out of the top 10 to 12th

That trend has has continued in 2024, with the survey showing that the town has dropped another position to rank 13th in the country.

Ennis’ An Taisce report stated the ranking was” A solid result for Ennis with the approach roads and residential areas of Westfield and Cathedral Court very much deserving the top litter grade”.

It was noted that the county town could achieve a top ranking with “a little extra care and attention” given to Ennis Bus & Train Station in particular.

Merchant’s Square and O’Connell Street were deemed to have just missed out on a top grade for litter rankings, while overall Ennis was deemed to be clean to a European norm.

Nationwide, Naas in Kildare claimed the top spot, with Kilkenny ranking second. Overall the survey found a reduction in plastic bottles and cans due the Deposit Return Scheme, was not enough to reduce overall litter levels.
