Ennis Sergeant Believes New Coercive Control Laws Responsible For Rise In Calls To Gardaí

An Ennis Garda Sergeant believes the introduction of legislation on coercive control may be one reason for the rise in domestic incidents in Clare this year.

Clare Gardaí have been called to 887 incidents so far this year, a 28% increase on the 665 calls recorded for the entirity of 2020.

Liaison Sergeant for Domestic Abuse in Clare, Caitríona Holohan, says that it can take victims of coercive control between 6 and 9 months to contact Gardaí locally.

Sergeant Holohan says the Covid-19 pandemic also caused an increase in abuse, notably between adult children and parents.
