Ennis retailers and members of the public have sent 158 letters of objection to Clare County Council outlining their opposition to plans to keep O’Connell Street pedestrianised and closed to traffic until the new year.
The ‘Retailers of Ennis’ group, has also sent a letter to all seven Ennis Municipal District county councillors to outline their concerns over current street closures between the hours of 11.30am to 4.30pm.
The letter to Ennis area councillors, which has been seen by Clare FM, claims that the lobby group did not receive any prior notice from the local authority of the proposed extension of O’Connell Streets closure to traffic.
The group say that they had just two days to make a submission to Clare County Council once they became aware of the issue.
The letter claims that the ongoing closure of O’Connell Street to traffic could delay fire engines and Garda vehicles from accessing the town centre.
They have asked councillors to state if they are in favour or are opposed to the road closure.
The letter states that the people objecting to the closure feel ignored and voiceless.
