An Ennis based retail lobby group fears a sudden increase in wage bills would force many local businesses into closure.
It follows the introduction of the ‘Equal pay for young workers bill’ by People Before Profit in the Dáíl, which is seeking the abolishment of ‘sub minimum wage’.

There are currently over 34,000 such workers in Ireland earning between €7.90 & €10.17 per hour.
Managing Director of Retail Excellence Ireland, Duncan Graham believes, however, jobs will be at risk if wage hikes are not implemented with a measured approach.
