The inspection, which the facility was informed about 48 hours prior to it happening, took place at the end of July.

It reflected positively on the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infection at the hospital.

It’s also been found to be compliant or substantially compliant in five of the areas assessed.

HIQA praised the facility’s preparedness for COVID-19, referencing minimum staffing needs being identified and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. There were no confirmed or suspected cases of the virus on the premises on the day of the inspection.

However, a number of infrastructural issues which the report claims ‘had the potential to impact on infection prevention and control measures’ were identified during the course of the inspection.

The report concluded that hospital management was awaiting a planned move to a newly refurbished unit at the time of the inspection, which HIQA say would further mitigate infection prevention and control risks once operational.
