An Ennis Publican says the proposed changes to pub licensing laws are driven by the Dublin city nightclub scene.
It follows a major report on the proposed changes to licensing laws published this week, including extending opening hours and harsher punishments for people who abuse staff.
The changes to pub licensing laws, proposed by Minister Helen McEntee, has this week been examined by the Oireachtas Justice Committee
The committee, chaired by James Lawless, has made suggestions to the report including stricter penalties on people who abuse pub and bar staff, as well as, concerns that some shops provide deliveries of beer to public parks.
The updated laws could see pubs opening as early as 10am and nightclubs being allowed to serve alcohol until as last as 5am.
Clare VFI Chair, Charlie O’Meara, says it is hard for many rural pubs to roster staff for normal hours, let alone extended late hours.
Meanwhile, the Oireachtas Justice Committee has also proposed a levy on the price of a pint to go towards combatting problems created by alcohol abuse.
Owner of Durty Nellys in Bunratty, Maurice Walsh says the ever increasing price of alcohol is pushing pubs to the brink.
