Judge Gerald Keys jailed 24-year-old Darren Maughan of Stonecourt, Ennis for two years for the attack on 41-year-old Michael Nihill of Dromard, Ennis.

In a hand-written apology to the victim, maughan said he was "ashamed and embarrassed", and that "drink and drugs" have ruined his life.

For his part, Mr. Nihill told Gardaí that he didn't understand why the incident occured, and that there had never been cross words between them.

Nihill's left arm was in a sling at the time of the assault, in which he sustained a total of over 70 stitches.  Despite this, in his victim impact statement, he said he forgave Maughan and bore him no ill-will.

In court, a Garda handed €5,000 in compensation on behalf of Mr Maughan to the victim, but Judge Keys said the assault was "completely unprovoked" and imposed a three year jail term, suspending the final year.

Mr. Nihill required a Garda escort from the court after the case, and left through a side-entrance.
