25,276 people were living in Ennis when the Census was taken last year, a fall of 0.3% when compared with five years ago.

However, Ennis is still bigger than any town in Munster, according to the CSO.

The Office has also published details of the population of other towns and villages here.

Falls were also experienced in Doonbeg, Kilfenora, Kilkee and Liscannor.

On the other hand, Sixmilebridge was the fastest growing town in Clare, according to the CSO, and population growth was also recorded in Shannon, Quin, Miltown Malbay, Lissycasey, Killaloe, Ennistymon, Crusheen and Clonlara.

The latest publication also confirms that the county’s rural population is on the up, meanwhile.

72- of the near-119,000 people living here are in rural areas.
