Ennis Green Rep Believes Local Transport Plan Will Improve Safety And Congestion

Ennis’ Green Party Representative believes newly proposed transport measures for the town will ultimately benefit all traffic.

It comes as the public consultation phase of the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan is set to close tomorrow.

The plan contains 116 active travel proposals for the town, with priority projects at the Clareabbey Roundabout, Shanaway Road, Tulla Road, Gort Road and Lahinch Road.

There’s also a strong emphasis on pedestrian priority which will be introduced in stages at O’Connell Street, Abbey Street, the Western side of Francis Street, High Street and Salthouse Lane.

However the plan also has elements that are proving to be contentious already, including proposals for a one-way street on Mill Road that as a consequence would lead to more traffic re-routed through a residential area of Cloughleigh.

Clare Green Party member Bridget Ginnity says while a slight revision may be needed, it’s vital the safety and congestion concerns are addressed.

The one-way proposal on Mill Road has already been the subject of a community protest, over local concerns it will cause more congestion and safety issues than it will solve.

At present the council is trying to find a solution to providing a pedestrian footpath on the Southbound side of the road, which currently cannot be installed due to the presence of a protected structure.

However, one local businessman believes there are already appropriate alternatives in place, such as a cycle way and footpath behind Ennis Lawn tennis club, which also circumnavigates the route.

Michael Barry who also owns the Old Ennis Corn Market Store on Mill Road believes safety issues can be addressed with appropriate signage.

Public submissions to the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan close tomorrow Friday June 27th at midnight.
