The latest figures from the CSO show 5,445 people claimed some form of unemployment benefit in Clare last month, a rise of 54 on September.

Ennis was the only area to see a fall-off in Live Register figures, which suggests the economic recovery hasn’t yet spread to other areas of the county.

The most significant rise came in North Clare, where there’s traditionally a drop in employment after the summer season; an additional 68 people signed on in October.

While in West Clare, an additional 33 people joined the dole queues and in East Clare, there was a rise of 10.

But the figure for Clare is the lowest for the month of October since 2008 and represents a 46% drop on it’s peak in 2010.
