An Ennis economist believes companies have already ‘pressed pause’ on investing in Ireland, ahead of the impending trade war with the United States.
It comes as multiple reports have warned of the possibility of American multinational companies pulling out of Ireland, resulting in large scale job losses and a 2% contraction to the Irish economy over the next five years.
Assistant Professor of Social Policy at UCD, Micheál Collins, says it’s not possible to implement these changes overnight and that a lot will ride on the results of the next Midterm and Presidential election results in the US.
The Enterprise Minister believes there could be room for negotiation when Donald Trump unveils his latest plans for tariffs on April 2nd, but speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Ennis native Collins claims corporation tax income from advertising by companies like Google could be the first revenue source to dry up.
