An Ennis District Court Judge has refused to accept ten thousand euro from a former Limerick inter county footballer, as an independent surety.
John Galvin, from Croom in Co Limerick, attended Ennis District Court this afternoon to provide the guarantee on behalf of 50-year old Thomas Howard was before the court on charges relating to the alleged false imprisonment of three Clare people.
However Judge Patrick Durcan, who was dealing with the bail application, said he couldn't accept the surety, after the court heard Mr Galvin was not the only source of the money.
As former Limerick football star John Galvin approached the witness box in court number one to give evidence that he was providing ten thousand euro as an independent surety on behalf of Thomas Howard, Judge Patrick Durcan realised Mr Galvin was not the only source of the money.
When the judge asked him if the money was coming from his own bank account, Mr Galvin said some of it was coming from the accused's sister.
The court heard earlier the accused owes five and half thousand euro to his sister and another family member.
Judge Durcan described it as a "set up job" and that the court was being "stitched up" and that an attempt had been made to mislead the court.
The accused's solicitor refuted there was any attempt to mislead the court.
Judge Durcan later acknowledged there was "no atempt" to mislead the court and adjourned the bail application to next Monday.
Thomas Howard of Gortnaminch, Listowel, who works on Mr Glavin's farm in Co Limerick, is charged with the false imprisonment of a father, his daughter and her boyfriend in Sixmilebridge, Co Clare last a month.
He is also charged with possession of a double barrel shotgun with intent to commit a robbery on the same date.
