Ennis District Court was suspended tempoarily this afternoon after the Judge was confronted by a 79 year old anti-war activist dressed in a Guantanamo-Bay style Orange jump suit.
Galway woman Margaretta D’Arcy was before the court in connection with the alleged interference of the proper use of Shannon airport by going onto the runway without permission.
When Margaretta D’arcy’s case was called, the 79 year old – who walks with the aid of a zimmer Frame – stood on the bench below the judge to hear that he was going to adjourn the matter because her co-accused wasn’t in court – but the well known anti-war activist insisted she wanted the judge to dismiss the summons against her, describing it as inaccurate.
On her refusal to get down from the bench, Judge Patrick Durcan suspended the court ordering the removal of the 79 year old from Ms D’Arcy who was dressed in an orange suit similar to those worn by detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre where Terror suspects are held by the US Military, but as he left the bench, Ms D’Arcy called out after him: “So you don’t want a conversation with me around the word ‘proper’" and the use of Shannon "as a military airport. Murder! Complicity in murder! Run away and never hear the truth."
As Ms D’Arcy stepped down from the bench with the assistance of Gardai and she was then applauded by her supporters in court including retired UN Assistant Secretary General, Denis Halliday and well-known anti-war activist, Dr Ed Horgan.
The case of Margaretta D’Arcy, of St Bridget’s Place, Woodquay, Galway, is due back in Court in September.
