Calls have been made for an independent enquiry to be carried out into claims that a reduction in the numbers of Gardai will have no impact on policing here.
The force is to be reduced by over 1,000 by the end of 2014, but Justice Minister Alan Shatter has insisted that this will have no detrimental impact.

The reduction will come primarily through retirements – here in Clare, 20 Gardai have left the force since the beginning of 2010 and as many more are set to do so by March.
Chairman of the Ennis Joint Policing Committee, Councillor Paul O’Shea, has told Clare FM that he wants the consequences of this to be looked into.
