An Ennis councillor fears the Midwest region is suffering from “health inequality” in relation to cancer survival.
Figures obtained from the HSE show the Midwest has a lower cancer survival rate across the board than the national average, with breast cancer patients in the region having an 81.6% survival rate, compared to 88.2% nationally.
The survival rate for colorectal cancer patients in the Midwest is 64.4% compared to 65.9% nationally, while the survival rate for lung cancer patients in the region is just 17.4%, compared to 24.3% nationwide.
Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard claims this part of the country is particularly disadvantaged when it comes to cancer detection and treatment.
