An Ennis community group believes a “happy medium” can be achieved when it comes to the pedestrianisation of Ennis’s main street.
Prior to the re-opening to traffic of O’Connell Street last week, Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Johnny Flynn had expressed fears that pedestrianizing the street could lead to a rise in anti-social behaviour, a loss of business earnings and inaccessibility for emergency vehicles.
An online survey conducted by Ennis Municipal District found that over 71% of its 1,796 participants would like to see some form of pedestrianisation “immediately”.
Ciaran Brennan, who’s a member of the community group Better Ennis, suggests that going forward, a fob system could be implemented to grant emergency services personnel access to the street while preserving it as a pedestrian area.
