An Ennis-based paramedic and his girlfriend, who saved the life of a tourist in a high-profile incident on the Aran Islands, have been honoured with bravery awards for their actions.
The 21 year old Indian woman was swept off a rocky ledge at the worm hole on Inis Mor, in an incident seen by Seamus McCarthy and Finnoula Quigley.
As Finnoula went to get help, while Seamus went to her aid and used a backpack and jacket as a makeshift rope to pull her from the water.
The incident was caught on video, and was seen by over 1 million people online.
Seamus and Fionnuala, as well as Garda Brian O'Donnell, were among 42 people honoured by Irish Water Safety in an event at Dublin Castle.
