Retail Excellence Ireland says the three months to the end of December proved a robust trading period, however the arrival of bad weather and the resulting flooding led to a slow-down in growth, particularly in the west and midlands.
The grocery sector was the star performer in December with gains of 2.85 per cent, the largest monthly increase since May 2012, while the uplift in the residential housing market had a positive impact on furniture and flooring, up 10 per cent.
Head of Commercial and Communications with REI, Lynn Drumgoole says the last three months of the year was a positive period for many sectors.
