Ennis-Based IRHA Rep Says Holyhead Closure A “Tsunami” For Hauliers

A Clare haulier has slammed Government inaction on the closure of the Port of Holyhead which it’s claimed is like a “tsunami” for those in the transport industry.

The Welsh commercial and ferry port is expected to be out of commission until after Christmas, due to damage caused by Storm Darragh across December 6th and 7th.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport, James Lawless has signed off on a derogation to allow drivers to work outside of normal hours, while the “ramping up” of public transport connections is also being explored to facilitate the estimated 150,000 passengers trying to get home for Christmas.

Ennis-based representative and former president of the Irish Road Haulage Association, Eugene Drennan has been telling Clare FM’s Seán Lyons that similar measures must be implemented in the UK to prevent significant delays for passengers and freight.
