The Clare clergyman who’s set to begin a prestigious new role representing the pope in East Africa has ensured his hometown will retain pride of place throughout his mission.
Ennis native and newly ordained Archbishop Seamus Horgan received a Mayoral reception at Áras Chontae An Chláir last night in recognition of his appointment as the first ever Papal Nuncio to South Sudan.
He will now act as the personal representative of Pope Francis in the poverty-stricken nation, which has been intermittently ravaged by civil war and famine since its establishment in 2012.
Archbishop Horgan’s coat of arms for the role will include the symbols of the Ennis galleon and the key of the Killaloe Diocese and he insists having a reminder of where he comes from will help in performing his duties.
