Concerns are being raised about the potential environmental impact of a €1.2 billion data centre project in Ennis.

Planning applications for a site on the Tulla road were lodged last month, with 1,450 jobs expected to be created if the project is given the green light.

Art Data Centres, which is responsible for the works, says in its Environmental Impact Assessment Report to the local authority that impacts during the construction phase will be ‘short term’ and ‘not significant’.

The design submitted to the Council also pledges a low carbon model by using external air for cooling, collecting rainwater and using solar panels for hot water generation.

However, Emanuela Ferrari of climate action group Futureproof Clare doesn’t believe powering the facility via renewable energy is enough to mitigate possible impacts on the environment.

Art Data Centres has been approached for comment by Clare FM.
