The ESB is being called on to make clear its plans for Moneypoint power station between 2025 and 2028.

It comes as the utility is set to unveil plans this morning of an offshore wind project at the West Clare facility as part of its nationwide long-term strategy for decarbonisation.

It’s estimated that one and a half million homes across Ireland could be powered by Moneypoint if the project gets the green light.

However, the plant is due to stop its coal burning practice in 2025, and it’s intended that wind energy wouldn’t be supplied by the plant until three years after that.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley is hopeful the ESB will provide clarity on the fate of the plant and its employees in those intervening years.
