End of an era for Ennis Traveller Centre

Today sees the final ever presentation of FETAC level Certificates to students of St. Joseph’s traveller training centre in Ennis.

The ceremony at the Auburn Lodge Hotel marks the end of an era for the centre, which was unique in Ireland when it opened as the Ennis Traveller Training Centre in 1964.

Located on the Gort Road, the facility will close as a traveller-only training centre at the end of June and then become the first all-purpose skills unit in Ennis and will be open to all adults across society.

Helen O’Sullivan, a former director of the centre, hopes the closure of the centre will not deter members of the travelling community from re-entering education.
