The Lough Derg RNLI is urging people taking to the waters to carry out regular engine checks and services.

It’s after a man’s 18-foot boat got into difficulty yesterday evening at Mountshannon Harbour on the Clare shore of Lough Derg, having sustained engine failure.

The lifeboat crew was dispatched to the area shortly after seven o’clock and found that the boat had drifted two miles south of the original location, and anchored at Castlelough on the Tipperary Shore.

The crew discovered the boat’s onboard motor was on fire and took action to bring it under control, after which minor first aid was administered to the skipper, for a recent injury to his hand.
