A player has been airlifted to hospital after being injured during a hurling match in East Clare this evening.
It’s understood that the player sustained an injury in the intermediate clash of Bodyke and Whitegate which was abandoned following the incident. The National Ambulance Service was called to the scene in Scarriff while the Irish Coast Guard was also requested to assist.
The Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter was tasked to undertake the medical evacuation. The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also mobilised to the incident.
The player, understood to be from the Bodyke club, was reported to have sustained an injury during the match and required transportation to hospital by helicopter.
Ambulance paramedics had assessed the treated the casualty at the scene while awaiting the arrival of the helicopter. Killaloe Coast Guard volunteers secured a landing zone at Scarriff GAA grounds for the helicopter.
Once the patient had been treated and prepared for transportation, Coast Guard personnel transferred the casualty from the ambulance to the helicopter.
The injured player was then flown to University Hospital Limerick for further treatment.
