Lough Derg RNLI is urging water users to check the weather forecast for inland lakes and always carry a means of communication after five people were brought to safety in two back-to-back callouts yesterday.

The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat launched shortly after midnight, after a 30 foot cruiser ran aground close to Mountshannon Harbour.

The skipper was found to be safe and unharmed aboard the casualty vessel and the boat was subsequently towed to safe water.

Around noon, as the lifeboat was departing the scene, it was requested to assist a family of four in a 40 foot cruiser, which had broken down on the north-eastern shore of the lake.

All people on board were safe and unharmed and wearing their lifejackets and their vessel was towed to Kilgarven Harbour.
