Emergency Landing At Shannon Airport For American Airlines Jet

A multi-agency emergency plan has been mounted at Shannon Airport after the crew of a US-bound jet got into difficulty an emergency over the Atlantic.

The crew of American Airlines flight AA-63 declared a Mayday at around 1.15pm this afternoon after reporting an issue with one of the jet’s engines.

The Boeing 777-200 jet, with 219 passengers and crew on board, was over an hour northwest of Shannon at the time.

It was about three hours into its flight from Paris to Miami in Florida at the time.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon Town and Ennis stood by at Shannon to provide support the airport’s own fire and rescue service.

A number of National Ambulance Service resources and Garda units were also dispatched to the airport.

The flight landed at Shannon shortly after 2.30pm.

The airline has confirmed that the flight suffered a ‘mechanical’ issue.

A spokeswoman said: “Our maintenance team will evaluate the aircraft, we hope to get our customers on their way to Miami as soon as possible.”
