Elderly Man Dies After Being Struck By Car In Mountshannon

Update: A main road in East Clare has reopened following a fatal incident overnight.

An elderly man was struck by a vehicle in Mountshannon before he subsequently passed away.

The man, who was believed to have been in his 80s, died after he was struck by a car on the main street in Mountshannon at around 7.45pm yesterday evening.

He was pronounced dead at the scene following the arrival of emergency services and his body removed to University Hospital Limerick.

The man is understood to be from the local area.

Garda Forensic Investigators have now completed a technical investigation and the R352 road has reopened to traffic.

Gardaí in Ennis are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

They say any road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the R352 between 7:30pm and 8:00pm last evening, are asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

Earlier: Gardai remain at the scene of a fatal road crash in East Clare that took place last night.

Earlier: The main R352 Scarriff to Portumna road is closed in Mountshannon following a serious road traffic collision this evening.

Emergency services are currently at the scene of what is believed to have been a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. The incident occurred in the main street through the village.

National Ambulance Service paramedics, Gardaí and Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Scarriff station responded to the incident shortly after 8.00pm.

The main road through the village has been closed and is not expected to reopen until the scene has been examined by Garda Forensic Investigators.
