At least three people are feared dead.
Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs says there's no indication of any Irish people involved in the raid on a hotel in Mali.
They're advising Irish people not to travel to Mali and are encouraging anyone already in the country to follow the instructions of local authorities.
Witnesses say a number of those inside the hotel were freed because they were able to recite passages of the Koran.
