Focus On “Functional Use” Of Irish Needed Claims Clare Gaeilgóir

A prominent Clare Gaeilgóir insists the Department of Education needs to focus on teaching functional use of the Irish language to increase interest in it.

It comes as a review of Leaving Cert education has highlighted mixed views on whether Irish should remain a compulsory subject at that level.

Many of the students who responded to the survey, carried out by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, felt that taking Irish should be a choice.

Príomhoide of Coláiste Eoghan Uí Chomhraide Dónal Ó Lionsigh, who presents Cúl Caint on Clare FM, says nothing will change unless the approach to Irish changes first.
