Management at an Ennis secondary school has called on the Department of Education to enhance the allocation of guidance counselling for schools.

St Flannan’s College was subject to a rigorous three-day inspection in May, during which inspectors spoke with management, staff, pupils and parents.

Inspectors gave a glowing review of teaching and learning but shortcomings in counselling services were identified.

This inspection took place between May 7th of 9th of this year, shortly before the school broke up for the exam period.

Overall, inspectors have provided a glowing report of St Flannan’s College, praising the teaching, learning outcomes and management structures.

It was found that there is a very strong sense of pride at the school and that students value the supports given to them for both cirricular and extra-cirrcular learning.

However, inspectors have highlighted shortcomings in the school’s counselling services, with both pupils and parents commenting on delays in appointments.

In response, the Board of Management says they welcome the advice but that their hands are tied due to the allocation of guidance counselling services from the Department.

They say it would be welcome if the Department would increase this allowance, to ensure the welfare of pupils can be looked after.
