A West Clare Councillor says EU funding must be sought to support the communities around Moneypoint, rather than focusing on the power station itself.

Cillian Murphy wants to see funding drawn down under the Just Transition Mechanism, which puts measures in place to secure communities hit by shifting economies thanks to climate change.

He is calling for “sustainable energy communities” to be established in West Clare to offset the impact of Moneypoint ceasing coal burning operations in five years time – a move putting 750 jobs in jeopardy.
